SEP experienceIt is really a once in a lifetime experience to exchange in US. There are so many new things that I have never seen before. U.S. is clearly a western country and the most developed country in the world. More precisely, it is the world’s most accommodating country, in which every race, culture and way of living exists together. The 48 continental states cover a large space. Although I have been to only 6 of them, they already showed me a huge variety. California is the place I was staying; and I should say that California is definitely a suitable place for human beings to live. The winter there is not cold at all, just 3 to 5 degrees above 0. In contrast, you may wear a blouse in the summer in a windy day. So I wear the same blouse in both winter and summer. But when I went to Arizona, it was a completely different climate. Just like in Las Vegas, which is a city built in desert, I sweated top of my T-shirt every day walking under the sun. On the way from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, a clear distinction could be recognized between the plants. On the western rim of Rocky Mountain, everywhere is covered in green; but on the eastern part, we can only see patches of short bushes standing in the sands by twos and threes. On the other hand, we can trace the history of a city from its style of buildings, especially the difference between the western and eastern part of the U.S. Buildings in San Francisco and Los Angeles are more modern, while those city halls in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. are more old-fashioned and I can even smell the historical flavor embedded in them. Besides, cities in the U.S. have their own characteristics. Just take New York and Boston for example, which is merely off by hundreds of miles. New Yorkers are dressed formally and pacing fast every day to rush to work. They always seem to be in a hurry, since they pick up phone calls as fast as the traffic lights. In contrast, Bostonees are having such a good time in enjoying their lives. I saw a huge numbers of people jogging along the Charles River, no matter old or young; I saw bunch of students sitting in the pubs or bars, cheering up and gossiping about their new coming ecturer. The U.S. is full of all kinds of people and things that you will always get shocked by them.
This picture was taken in UC, Berkeley. Some of the locals have been living on this tree for 3 year, in order to prevent this tree from being removed. UC, Berkeley used to have a plan to reconstruct this area. So the locals took on their actions against this plan.
This picture was taken in Boston. Bostonees like to jog along the Charles River. There is a Boston Marathon conducted by the local government every year.
Bostonees were performing a demonstration against the Bush’s government’s intention on Iran. I heard from one of my American friends that they have three so called “taboos”, which are politics, privacy and religion. While in the U.S., it is a place free of speech. People can express their opinions and feelings through legal ways. This is their rights.
I went on Student Exchange Programme in academic year 2006/07, semester 2. University of California, Berkeley is my exchange university. Frankly speaking, this is one of the best half years that I have experienced. I learnt a lot and became more mature, both physically and spiritually in Berkeley. Firstly, the academic system in Berkeley is quite different from NUS. Students in Berkeley were given more freedom and flexibility in choosing their majors and courses they want to study. As I was in College of Letter and Science, students in this college need not declare their major until their third year. They can try out all different courses to find out their own taste. One the other hand, the university pays special attention in consolidating the students’ foundation in science. Students need to take math, physics and chemistry courses as their basic requirement. Therefore, it is easier for them to transfer among different disciplines. At the same time, thousands of courses were provided by the university, which cover almost all the fields of study, even music and sports, while students have no restrictions in selecting any of them, as long as they can cope with it. One course that I found very innovative is called DeCal. This course is coordinated by the students themselves. Students, who share the same interests in studying one particular subject, which could be anything, like the animation the Simpsons’, can set up a DeCal course to dig into it. This is to encourage students building up and expanding their interests. Usually, students will take 4 or 5 courses per semester. But they will take more courses during registration period. This is because when instruction starts, they have five weeks to decide whether they really want to take the courses they have registered. During this time, students can go to the class, listen to the lecturers and get a genuine feeling of the course, so that they can finalize their decision. Secondly, staffs and students in Berkeley are professional and passionate. Of all the courses I have taken, I made a conclusion that though each lecturer has his/her own style of teaching, they all emphasize on the application of the course content. They like to raise questions during the class to trigger the students’ thinking. The questions could be either very simple or very deep, but students could always work them out and realize that the knowledge they just learnt could be applied in such a way. In contrast, the students are also very proactive. They are encouraged to ask questions whenever there is a doubt. It is very common that a class is interrupted by questions many times, since students need to clarify their doubts. Besides, most of the students are well organized and make full use of their time. Since they are already adults, they were asked to make livings on their own. Many students take student loan to pay for their tuition, while doing part-time jobs to pay it back and get living expenditure. Just like my lab partner, he did a part-time in the morning of Thursday from 9 to 12. But the lab was in the afternoon from 12 to 5. So every Thursday, I saw him rushing into class with chicken and chips. He could only have his lunch in the class. This does not mean that students in Berkeley do not have their leisure time. All the students are involved in different groups, clubs and societies. Indeed, a lot of the students go to pubs and clubs during night time. Americans like pubs and clubs. The fact is that they can manage their time and life. Being in Berkeley was quite a piece of unforgettable experience. I can still imagine the fat little squirrel standing in front of me seeking for food; I can still imagine five of us sitting in a discussion room, busy mugging up for the midterms; I can still imagine all the members of the lab course having a party after we have accomplished our last experiment… I am sure the half-year overseas experience has reshaped my ideology, expanded my horizon and helped me understand the world better. |
